When camping, it's important to be aware of the presence of various creepy crawlies seeking dark and warm places to hide. Leaving your shoes outside to air out while you sleep might seem like a good idea, but it can inadvertently invite critters to make themselves at home. The last thing you want is to discover an unexpected companion when you slip your shoes on. Instead, it's advisable to keep your shoes inside your tent. If you're not using a tent, consider storing your shoes in a bag to prevent any unwelcome surprises.

Additionally, it's a good practice to tap your shoes on the ground a few times before putting them on. While this might agitate any occupants inside, the purpose is to loosen them up, allowing you to shake them out. In arid regions, the most commonly encountered insects in shoes are scorpions, spiders, and ants, though each area may have its own unique critters. It's worth noting that snakes, too, are known to seek out warm spots during the night, so be sure to check your shoes in the morning.

When camping in snake country, it’s important to remember that snakes are often more active at night, especially in warm weather. Tents can unintentionally attract them since the fabric provides shade during the day and warmth at night, while food scraps or rodents around a campsite may also lure them closer. Snakes don’t seek people out, but they may curl up near tents or under gear as a safe hiding spot. Always use a flashlight when stepping out after dark, keep your tent zipped up, and store food securely to avoid drawing in prey animals that could attract snakes. A little caution goes a long way in preventing unwanted encounters.
