Gear: Sony VG-C4EM Vertical Grip
If you’re a Sony camera user, you may be considering the Sony VG-C4EM vertical grip as an addition to your photography kit (Sony Alpha 1, a7 IV, a7R IV, a7S III, and a9 II mirrorless cameras). The VG-C4EM is a battery grip that attaches to the bottom of your Sony camera, providing extended battery life and additional shooting controls. However, like any camera accessory, there are pros and cons to consider before making a purchase.
Category: Camera Gear
Weight: 10.3 oz. (without batteries)
Price Range: $398
Pros:
Extended battery life: One of the most significant advantages of the Sony VG-C4EM vertical grip is the extended battery life it provides. The grip can hold two NP-FZ100 batteries, effectively doubling your camera's battery capacity. This is particularly useful for long shoots or when traveling, as you won't have to worry about running out of power. Improved handling: The VG-C4EM adds bulk to your camera, making it easier to grip and more comfortable to hold, especially when shooting in portrait orientation. The grip also features a second shutter button and additional controls, allowing you to operate the camera more easily when shooting vertically. Weather-resistant: The Sony VG-C4EM vertical grip is designed to be weather-resistant, providing protection against dust and moisture. This is particularly useful if you shoot in challenging weather conditions or environments. Convenient charging: The VG-C4EM grip allows you to charge your batteries while they are still attached to the camera. This means you won't have to remove the batteries to charge them, saving you time and hassle.
Cons:
Price: The Sony VG-C4EM vertical grip is an expensive accessory, which may be a barrier to some users. The grip is priced similarly to a mid-range lens, so you'll need to weigh the benefits against the cost. Material: Although most of the grip is made from Magnesium Alloy, the battery tray and door/latch are made from plastic and feels a little cheap. For the price, I would think the whole thing could be made from Magnesium.
The Sony VG-C4EM vertical grip is a useful accessory for Sony camera users, offering extended battery life, improved handling, and weather-resistant protection. Ultimately, whether the Sony VG-C4EM vertical grip is worth the investment will depend on your specific photography needs and preferences. If you frequently shoot in challenging environments and need extended battery life, the grip may be a worthwhile purchase. I personally find the battery grip a must when using my Sony 200-600mm Telephoto lens. With it installed it just provides a more secure grip on the camera for the large heavy lens.
