Gear: ICECO 21QT APL20 Light Duty Aluminum Freezer
When it comes to overlanding, long photo shoots in remote places, or even just weekend camping trips, having a reliable, portable freezer can make or break your experience. After testing out the ICECO 21QT APL20 Light Duty Aluminum Freezer, I can confidently say this compact unit punches well above its weight class. Here's a breakdown of my experience with it and why it earned a permanent spot in the back of my Subaru.
First Impressions
Right out of the box, the APL20 feels solid. Its aluminum alloy exterior gives it a premium and durable feel, while still keeping the unit lightweight (just under 25 lbs empty). The latches and handles are solid, and the overall build screams “ready for the trail,” even though it's labeled as “light duty.”
The form factor is ideal for small SUVs, crossovers, and car campers. Its 21-quart capacity is perfect for solo or duo outings—enough room to fit a weekend’s worth of essentials like meats, veggies, drinks, and camera batteries that are sensitive to heat.
Key Features
Single Zone Operation: It’s either a fridge or a freezer—but not both. For me, that’s fine. I tend to pre-plan meals and freeze them beforehand, so I usually run it as a dedicated freezer.
Temperature Range: Adjustable down to -4°F (-20°C). It reached target temps quickly and held them steady, even when ambient temps climbed above 90°F.
DC & AC Power Options: Comes with both 12/24V DC and 110V AC cords, allowing it to run from your vehicle while driving and then from shore power or a portable battery once you stop.
Low Power Draw: Super efficient. I ran this for 11 hours straight off a 600Wh portable power station and still had juice to spare.
Shockproof Design: ICECO claims it can handle a 40° tilt and still operate, which I didn’t fully test—but I did run it on some rocky forest roads and it never faltered.
Digital Display: Easy-to-read controls with a lock feature to prevent accidental button presses.
Real-World Performance
I put the APL20 through its paces on a recent 3-day photo trip along California’s Eastern Sierra. It maintained 30°F in 95°F ambient temps and kept frozen meats solid the entire trip. The aluminum exterior also made it easy to wipe down after a dusty day off-grid.
While it's compact, be aware that 21 quarts equals just enough for 18 cans or a couple of meal-prep containers and drinks. If you're planning to feed a family, look at ICECO’s larger models. But for one or two people, it’s the ideal size without hogging cargo space.
Downsides
Single Zone Only: You can’t split it between fridge and freezer.
No Internal Battery
Final Thoughts
The ICECO APL20 is a rugged, efficient, and compact portable freezer that’s perfect for weekend warriors, solo travelers, and photographers who need to keep gear or perishables cold in the field. At around $500–$559, it’s not the cheapest 21QT unit out there, but the build quality and performance justify the price.
Whether you're chasing golden hour light or escaping into the wild for a few days, the ICECO APL20 is a worthy companion.
